In her talk, “The Courage to Open Spaces”, Esra Küçük explores how institutions like Haus. Kunst. Mitte. can create spaces that foster connection across boundaries. Especially in the context of exile and migration, such spaces carry a particular responsibility: they hold the power to open access and enable belonging.

    Discover, discuss and create together.

We begin with a tour of the exhibition, which features works by artists from Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine and other countries. Their works tell of art that transcends borders. A sensory trail offers the opportunity to experience art with all the senses.

Afterwards, young people aged 14 and above, as well as adults, are invited to express their discoveries in their own artistic form. Our education team will be on hand to provide support and inspiration for creative design. A wide range of materials will be available for creating collages or drawings.

Anyone who wishes to do so can display their work in a pop-up exhibition on 29 November 2025 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at HAUS.KUNST.MITTE.

Amsterdam, 1942: Five years after the propaganda exhibition ‘Degenerate Art’ in Munich, Max Beckmann and his wife Mathilde, known as Quappi, are living in exile. The couple try to forget that Holland has offered them little peace and livelihood since the German invasion by meeting friends and taking trips to the sea.

Against this backdrop, Marianne Ludes unfolds her novel, in which she recounts the life of the famous artist couple in a lively, entertaining and exciting way. She tells of deep love, creative inspiration and an unconventional friendship that is historically documented. The author pays particular attention to Mathilde Beckmann (née von Kaulbach), who was trained as a violinist and singer but gave up her art after marrying Max Beckmann. In her new novel, Marianne Ludes creates a sparkling literary monument to Mathilde.

Set during the Beckmanns' exile in Amsterdam, the novel ties in thematically with our exhibition.

On display are collages and drawings by around 70 participants – from primary school pupils to university students – created during workshops for the exhibition ‘Exile – Art Without Borders’.

The works are personal reactions to the exhibition or answers to the question: ‘What does home mean to you?’ – Is it an address, a person, an object, perhaps a cup, a smell or a sound?
