The Art of Two
Between Autonomy and Collaboration
22.05. – 22.08.2026
The group exhibition planned for mid-May to mid-August 2026 at Haus Kunst Mitte spans 22 exhibition spaces and brings together artist couples from the past 50 years. It presents positions from East and West Germany from the 1970s and 1980s as well as works by currently active couples based in Berlin.
Artistic production is presented as a dialogical process shaped by both proximity and tension. Couple constellations appear as productive structures in which exchange, competition, and mutual support are reflected in style, imagery, and artistic attitude. In this way, art history can also be read as a history of relationships. At the center of the exhibition are artistic collaboration and its conditions: explored are educational and working contexts, visibility, professional trajectories, and broader social frameworks.
The Kunstsammlung der Berliner Volksbank is the main lender and presents works by historical artist couples, which form the reference framework for the contemporary positions. In two previous exhibitions, individual artist couples were already in focus, forming the starting point for this expanded approach.
Currently active artist couples each design their own rooms and present their works in direct spatial proximity to one another.
