Die Augen der Roxana Halls

Neue Britische Figurative Malerei

01.07. – 01.10.2023

Roxana Halls (born 1974, London UK) is a British figurative painter who has become known for her paintings of wayward women who refuse to conform to society's expectations, as well as for her wry humor and disturbing narratives. She lives and works in south London.

Halls searches for new ways to represent women and engages deeply with the tradition of depicting women and the female body in Western art history and media. Halls contrasts the often stereotypical and misogynistic presentations, whether in art or film or advertising, with pictorial inventions that open up new scopes of action for them, beyond the barriers set by society.

She fights with humor and inventiveness to enforce inclusive habits of representation and identification. Her paintings, all created without preliminary drawings, surprise with unusual angles and subjects, intense color contrasts, and an old-master application of paint.

Halls has been drawn to theater and film since childhood and initially wanted to become an actress. The exhibition title The Eyes of Roxana Halls refers to this close relationship and alludes to the neo-noir thriller Eyes of Laura Mars. Under the title of the same name, a selection of her works curated by Duo Vision was presented at London's Gallery 46 in May 2022.

The exhibition is accompanied by a booklet, available at the box office.
