Cabinet exhibition Winter 2024/25
Manfred Bartling
The 2024/25 winter exhibition presented a curated selection of works by the founder and artist Manfred Bartling. On display were serial works from 1994 in which photography and painting come together as collage. In the course of his artistic development, Bartling explored the connection between different media and experimented with their boundaries and transitions.
In the works on display, Bartling combines photographic series of everyday objects, such as candlesticks, vases and cutlery, with red lacquer paint applied afterwards. Photography forms the background, while painting in the foreground complements and subsequently alters the composition. These works were shown as part of the exhibition States of uncertain Domesticities - a <performative> exhibition. In this exhibition, the rooms were designed through performative and installative interventions in such a way that they recalled their original function as living spaces. The cabinet exhibition takes up this reference to the domestic. Since the early 1970s, Bartling has used objects from his everyday life and integrated them directly into his artistic work, which he described as ‘Bartling Pop’ in relation to developments in international art.
