The human body occupies a central place in the work of Manfred Bartling (1938–2020). In his paintings, it becomes a starting point for exploring human experience and interpersonal relationships—an aspect that also runs through the exhibition Bodies that Speak.

In the oil paintings selected here, Bartling’s figures remain curiously open. Vivid colours and graphic structures shape the pictorial spaces, lending the scenes an immediate, at times playful dynamism. Rather than being characterised as distinct individuals, the figures are integrated into the pictorial space through their postures and gestures. The result is a series of fleeting moments that appear both familiar and enigmatic, leaving room for different perceptions and associations.

The painted piece of wood above the display case establishes a connection between Bartling’s artistic work and the history of this house. Its dotted pattern refers to a recurring motif in Bartling’s work. Together with the photographs in the display case, it recalls his artistic practice while also evoking the origins of the house. In 1999, Manfred Bartling and the poet Elisabeth Bartling founded the Asyl der Kunst Foundation. Their commitment to creating a space for contemporary art and increasing its visibility continues to shape Haus. Kunst. Mitte. to this day.
