The Art of Two - Künstlerpaar Vorstellung
Two perspectives, two viewpoints, one shared dialogue: in our 24th online gallery tour, we take a closer look at Franziska Klotz and Michael Wutz from the current exhibition “The Art of Two”.
Franziska Klotz and Michael Wutz
Klotz works ‘directly’, painting with her fingers and the palm of her hand; she presses, rubs and smears the paint. Klotz frequently employs a highly physical, impasto style – thick layers of paint, a strong sense of materiality, and often a tension between figuration and abstraction. Thematically, her paintings often revolve around social conditions, psychological tension, vulnerability and underlying violence or overwhelming pressure. Particularly in her more recent works, personal experiences intertwine with political and social impressions. This gives rise to visual worlds that defy any clear-cut interpretation. Rather than linear narratives, her works create emotional spaces of tension between aggression and sensuality.
In his series of small-format watercolours, Michael Wutz explores the visual worlds of digital self-presentation and their political and social significance. His starting point is an urban-ethnological archive of selfies and images from radical subcultural milieus, in which self-portrayals become propaganda icons. In his works, Wutz examines the ‘visual magic’ of these memes and the aestheticisation of politics: masks, symbols of power and digital visual codes appear as expressions of social upheavals and collective projections.
The artist couple live and work together in Berlin, where their constant exchange on art, politics and urban visual cultures has a significant influence on their respective work. Whilst Wutz explores objects and historical traces of the past, Klotz focuses more on the emotional and social conditions of the present. What unites them, however, is a keen awareness of materiality — of the question of how experience, memory and history are inscribed in objects and images.
