Key works in the exhibition, such as Großer Sitzender mit Ball (Large Seated Figure with Ball) by Frank Dornseif and Zwei Bälle (Two Balls) by Elke Judith Wagner, may appear starkly different at first glance. Yet in conversation, they form an unexpected harmony that highlights the couple’s collaborative spirit and shared creative journey. These works reflect a long-standing personal and artistic connection, exemplifying a deep engagement with material, form, and spatial presence.
Elke Judith Wagner’s Two Balls is a sculpture made of colored concrete. The two compact forms resemble ancient fragments and bear visible traces of their making. Cracks, pigment layers, and textured surfaces evoke a powerful materiality that is both raw and intentionally shaped. Despite its apparent simplicity, the dual form invites a quiet dialogue—a meditative coexistence. Subtle color gradations and nuanced formal shifts give the piece profound depth, making it a tactile and contemplative experience within contemporary concrete sculpture.
In contrast, Frank Dornseif’s Large Seated Figure with Ball is composed of steel tubing and cast stone, presenting a highly reduced human form. His treatment of industrial material is precise and deliberate. Despite the weight of the steel, the sculpture conveys lightness and movement. The figure appears caught in the act of standing or reclining, frozen mid-motion. A red ball, casually placed in the scene, becomes a counterpart—a weight, a companion, a playmate. The sculpture possesses both abstract severity and emotional presence, infusing the space with a sense of tension and balance. Dornseif achieves a strong corporeal impact through structural openness.
This exhibition illustrates how Wagner’s and Dornseif’s artistic positions complement one another. Wagner’s work emphasizes density and introspection, while Dornseif focuses on structure and openness. Both artists pursue a sculptural truth that transcends decoration. In juxtaposing these works, a vivid dialogue emerges—between concrete and steel, abstraction and physicality, stillness and movement.
The exhibitions FOUNDATIONS and ZWEI ANSICHTEN – DREI DIMENSIONEN: Artist couple Elke Judith Wagner und Frank Dornseif will be on view until July 25, 2025.
